Anything that is "wrong" with you began as a survival mechanism in childhood. Dr. Gabor Mate
We all have them, to some extent - parts of us, deeper down, cloaked with some version of the belief... "I am not worthy, I am not acceptable, I am not lovable". These beliefs were formed during times when there wasn't the love and support available to help us make sense of life, to help us through. Parts of us carry heavy burdens created by these beliefs - the bruised and broken reeds within us. To manage the resulting emotional distress, parts of us strive to distance it from conscious awareness, and from others, in various ways, thus blooming the common symptoms of anxiety and depression. When dreadful feelings of worthlessness inevitably rise, parts with more extreme and messy strategies take over - reacting in anger, or dousing them with substances, exciting distractions, or other ways, all in the attempt to protect us from feared states of unbearable emotional distress. There is hope. Internal Family Systems Therapy (IFS) is a means to heal our wounded and burdened parts. By soothing their distress and releasing them from destructive and limiting beliefs and roles, they relax into natural states of calm, compassion, curiosity, courage, clarity, connection, confidence and creativity - the spiritual fruits of a person healed by, and connected to, Love.
